Newark Police Officer Claudia Martinez responded to the 500 block of Market Street and found the 29-year-old man unresponsive on the floor around 1:10 a.m. Saturday, Public Safety Director Brian A. O’Hara said.

Martinez — a licensed practical nurse — immediately began chest compressions after noticing that the man had no pulse and was not breathing.

“There you go, there you go, it’s okay, it’s okay,” Martinez can be heard saying while continuing compressions as the man begins to breathe again on his own.

The man was then taken to University Hospital for further treatment.

“I commend Officer Martinez for applying her training as a licensed practical nurse to perform life-saving chest compressions, reviving an unresponsive man and preventing a tragedy,” O’Hara said.

“Every second counts when someone stops breathing. I am grateful that both of these first responders took the necessary, immediate steps to assist the victim.”
